There has been a recent increase in Syphilis cases in Cork and Kerry. It’s important to stay informed, get tested, and take steps to protect yourself and others.

What is Syphilis?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It can affect anyone who is sexually active and, if left untreated, can cause serious long-term health problems.

Signs and Symptoms

Syphilis is often called the “silent infection” because you might not notice any symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they can include:

  • A painless sore (chancre) at the site of infection, often on the genitals, anus, or mouth

  • Skin rashes, sometimes on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet

  • Flu-like symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, or swollen glands

  • In later stages, serious complications affecting the heart, brain, and other organs

Because symptoms may be mild or absent, the only way to know for sure is to get tested.

How to Protect Yourself and Others?

  • Get tested regularly, especially with every new partner

  • Use condoms or dental dams for all sexual activity. Order both for free from the Sexual Health Centre’s condom postal service here

  • Talk openly with partners about sexual health and STI testing

  • Avoid sexual contact if you or your partner have symptoms
