The Sexual Health Centre #SafeRsex campaign calls for additional precautionary measures during COVID-19 outbreak

The Sexual Health Centre launched its SafeRsex campaign last Thursday (26th March), to highlight the importance of taking additional precautionary measures regarding sexual activity during the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Amid the uncertainty caused by COVID-19, it is important to remember that as individuals, there are steps that we can take to protect ourselves and others,” said Dr. Martin Davoren, the Executive Director of the Sexual Health Centre.

“While intimacy is as important now as ever, it is vital that people take extra precautions regarding any physical contact with others, including sex.

“This campaign is a direct response to queries that our centre has received in relation to online hook-ups, condom provision, and what is now being called ‘#covidsex’.  We are conscious that for many people, this is a time of loneliness and disconnection, however we must all be particularly careful during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The SafeRsex campaign details the impact of COVID-19 on issues related to sexual relationships such as condom access, Sexually Transmitted Infections, Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and masturbation.

“While it is possible to be both safe and sexually active if neither you nor your sexual partner have COVID-19, it is crucial to be aware of the risks and precautionary measures that apply during this outbreak.”

“Importantly, everyone should avoid any physical contact, including sex, with anyone outside of their own household. The Sexual Health Centre is operating a free condom postal service, so that you can take every precaution and stay at home.

“In light of significant restrictions on STI screening services across the country, it is vital - now more than ever - to use a condom or dental dam to protect yourself from STI transmission,” Dr. Davoren concluded.

The Sexual Health Centre is operating many of its services, including counselling, by phone and online. For further advice and information, you can contact the Sexual Health Centre’s helpline at: 021-4276676 or email info@sexualhealthcentre.com.

The #SafeRsex campaign is available on the Sexual Health Centre’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn, running from 26th - 30th March.
