Pass the Pearls and #ShareTheWisdom with us! As part of European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (28 January–3 February), the Sexual Health Centre will have a stand at a special gathering on Wednesday, 31 January hosted by the Lady Mayoress of Cork Georgina Fitzgerald in the Clayton Hotel on Lapps Quay in the city. Taking place from 11am to 1pm, women aged 25 to 60 are being invited to attend the Cork Pearl of Wisdom event, which is aiming to raise awareness amongst women in Ireland of the importance of regular cervical screening. So please join us for music, refreshments, information and, of course, plenty of Pearls!

Since 2008 CervicalCheck – Ireland’s National Cervical Screening Programme has partnered with the Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) on the Pearl of Wisdom campaign to promote the week in Ireland. The Pearl of Wisdom is the European symbol of cervical cancer prevention and the campaign calls on women to check when their next free cervical screening is due by visiting or calling Freephone 1800 45 45 55.

Here at the Sexual Health Centre we would echo that call. Over 260 women in Ireland are diagnosed with cervical cancer annually and up to 70 lives are lost. Along with the HPV vaccine, regular cervical screening is the most effective way to reduce the risk of cervical cancer. You can avail of this screening from over 4,500 practitioners of your choice nationwide.

We would also urge you all to help us spread the word this week by wearing a Pearl of Wisdom, taking a selfie and sharing it on social media using the hashtag #ShareTheWisdom, You can add a virtual Pearl to your profile pictures by visiting
