JOB DESCRIPTION – TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The Sexual Health Centre (SHC) was founded in 1987, as Cork AIDS Alliance, to provide support to people living with HIV.  Since 1997, SHC has been a leading organisation supporting and promoting sexual health in Ireland.

Role:
SHC is seeking a highly motivated and experienced person to become its next Executive Director. The person will have the necessary skills required to lead a small innovative civil society/non-governmental organisation. The Executive Director should have relevant experience at a senior management level and should be an effective communicator and influencer who will secure the necessary funds to enable the development of the services.

  • Knowledge and understanding of social policy, equality and justice issues, political processes and how they can be influenced
  • An excellent understanding of corporate governance and experience of working with a Council or Board of Management
  • Excellent organisational, administrative, report writing and IT skills.
  • While experience of working in sexual health is not a prerequisite, an appreciation of and empathy for the issues of concern to SHC is required.
  • A third level qualification in a relevant discipline
  • A person of integrity

 

Key Objectives for the role are detailed below:

  1. To provide vision, direction and leadership to SHC and its stakeholders
  2. To formulate and implement the policy, objectives and strategic aims of SHC, in partnership with the Board and in consultation with staff and stakeholders
  1. To ensure the provision of best practice, innovative and responsive sexual health services
  2. To maintain up to date knowledge of sexual health and ensure the implementation of best practices
  • To play a leadership role in advancing policy through national structures, legislative change, public education and awareness raising
  • To provide business planning, financial sustainability and effective operational management to develop the services of SHC
  1. To ensure operational policies and procedures are legally compliant, effective and implemented throughout the organisation

 

Corporate Governance Responsibilities:

 Specific duties include:

  • Supporting the Board in developing the long-term strategic aims and immediate policy agenda of SHC
  • Facilitating regular Board meetings, reporting to the Board on progress, providing information and being accountable for organisational performance
  • Advising the Board on all aspects of the management of SHC
  • Preparing and coordinating the Annual General Meeting and Annual Report
  • Overseeing the financial management of the organisation including preparation of budgets, accounts and financial reports
  • Ensuring governance obligations are met.
  • Promoting positive employee relations in a manner that conforms to the ethos and policies of SHC, current legislation and best HR practices

 

Strategic Management Capability:

Specific duties include:

  • Ensuring that a long-term strategy is in place to guide SHC towards achieving its objectives
  • Protecting the overall financial stability of SHC through sound business planning, ensuring that SHC has the human, material and financial resources it needs to operate effectively and efficiently
  • Ensuring the production and implementation of appropriate business plans to achieve the strategies agreed by/with the Board
  • Overseeing all activities of the organisation – provision of information, publications, policy development, training, counselling, testing, communications and co-ordination of programmes in line with the SHC strategy
  • Providing leadership, direction, supervision and support to all staff
  • Providing support, performance management and regular supervision to designated staff

Policy Leadership Capability:

Specific duties include:

  • Conducting and overseeing policy and research, working closely with the Board
  • Developing and implementing a strategic policy agenda
  • Building and nurturing effective coalitions and alliances on priority issues and campaigns
  • Developing effective working relationships with key public officials
  • Acting as a strong and effective advocate on behalf of the organisation and, in conjunction with the Board, developing policies that will further the objectives of SHC.

 


 

Communications Capability:

Specific duties include:

  • Maintaining the strong brand and reputation of SHC, including publications, training, and resource development
  • Representing SHC and building on existing relationships with stakeholders and relevant agencies
  • Ensuring safe, legal and effective services are delivered throughout the organisation
  • Preparing press statements and articles on relevant issues
  • Making submissions to Government departments and other relevant bodies
  • Working to establish sound relationships with media personnel and being an effective spokesperson for the organisation.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary:                In the region of €65,000 – €70,000 commensurate with experience

Contract:            Permanent subject to satisfactory performance and the continued availability of funding.  A probationary period of 6 months will apply.

Hours:                A 37.5 hour working week. Due to the nature of the post, evening or weekend work may sometimes be required.

Holidays:            Holiday entitlement is 30 days annual leave, plus public holidays.

Reporting Relationship

The Executive Director will report to the Board.
